One recent example demonstrates how powerful those connections can be. 

Through GEM’s Testing & Proving pillar, IonDynamics was able to further develop and validate its FlashBot technology through the Detroit Smart Parking Lab 

Originally designed as a mobile charging solution for electric vehicles, FlashBot helps reduce charging infrastructure costs while providing flexible power where traditional charging stations may not be practical. For an early-stage company, access to testing environments and industry support can often be transformative. Through the Detroit Smart Parking Lab’s Autonomous Movement Initiative, overseen by GEM, IonDynamics received funding and the opportunity to demonstrate its technology in a real-world environment, helping validate its performance and increase visibility among industry stakeholders. 

“We received a $30,000 grant, which was critical at the time for us when we still had a prototype product and we were wanting to test out our autonomous operation and charging different manufacturing vehicles, and also to demonstrate our ability to train untrained operators on how to utilize our equipment,” said Josh Bitterman, co-founder and head of business development at IonDynamics.  

In the case of FlashBot, those opportunities helped create momentum that extended beyond the initial application and into exciting new areas.  

While the technology was originally developed to address challenges within the electric vehicle industry, the validation testing and demonstrations helped increase visibility for the technology and opened the door to additional opportunities for investment, exhibition, and industry engagement. Over time, FlashBot gained attention for its ability to provide portable, flexible power with reduced emissions – qualities that also proved valuable in applications like events and on-location film production. Production crews in Hungary and across Europe began using FlashBot as a cleaner, quieter alternative to diesel generators on film sets, demonstrating how a solution developed for mobility challenges could address needs in entirely different industries. 

The technology itself did not change. What changed was the realization that the solution could address a much broader set of needs. And this is exactly the kind of outcome that strong innovation ecosystems help create. When companies have opportunities to test and showcase technologies in real-world environments, and connect with diverse partners, they are more likely to discover applications that extend beyond their original intent. What begins as a mobility solution can become an energy solution, a construction solution, or even a solution for cleaner on-set power during movie and television production. 

These cross-industry success stories are becoming increasingly common as mobility technologies continue to evolve. Solutions developed to address transportation challenges often tackle broader issues related to power, connectivity, efficiency, and sustainability. As a result, their impact frequently reaches far beyond the mobility sector itself.
