Research aims to help stakeholders in Detroit region build more focused programming

DETROIT, September 9, 2024 – The Global Epicenter of Mobility (GEM), a signature program of the Detroit Regional Partnership (DRP) designed to enable growth and development of the advanced mobility industry in the 11-county Detroit region, released its Future Mobility Technology Study today. The comprehensive research report outlines the seven advanced mobility technologies with the strongest mid-term growth potential (to 2030) in Southeast Michigan.

“The Future Mobility Technology Study provides business leaders and mobility stakeholders in the Detroit Region with explicit insights to shape near-term business strategies,” said Bernard Swiecki, vice president of mobility and research for GEM. “Our region is uniquely positioned to lead the transition to clean fuels, and this study paints a clearer picture of the path forward.”

The seven technologies selected for the study were evaluated through an in-depth analysis of the supply chain, measuring the impact of each technology on the Detroit Region through the lens of job-creation and potential differentiated investments. GEM enlisted S&P Global Mobility to conduct the research.

The technologies identified in the study with the strongest growth potential include:

  • Battery Chemistry and Design
  • Electric Motors
  • Power Electronics
  • Propulsion Thermal Management Systems
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems
  • Software: Software-Defined Vehicles, Cybersecurity and Over-the-Air
  • Assembly Automation

The report indicates adoption and penetration of these seven technologies will shift significantly by 2030, representing greater opportunities for investments and employment in the Detroit Region. Battery technology, which currently sits at 8% market penetration, is expected to grow to 36% by 2030, while e-motor technology is expected to jump from 20% to 70% in the same timeframe.

GEM and the DRP will actively use this research to work with other regional partners to better identify and attract new business and investment opportunities to the Detroit Region.

“In the coming years, active collaboration and support from key stakeholders – GEM partners, economic development agencies, educational institutions and government entities – will be essential for positioning the Detroit region as the epicenter of all things mobility,” said Christine Roeder, executive vice president of GEM. “By equipping stakeholders with critical insights, GEM can help strategically position the region to capture a larger portion of the sector’s growth.”

While the Future Mobility Technology Study focuses on high-level insights regarding regional growth opportunities, GEM plans to research and publish additional studies in the future. These reports will focus on policy recommendations, workforce needs and supply-chain insights that can further inform the region’s business growth and attraction strategies.
