Beyond the Motor City: Benchmarking the Detroit Region’s Software-Defined Vehicle future

A software-defined vehicle, or SDV, is built around computing systems that allow software to operate more independently from the vehicle’s physical hardware. Modern vehicles can receive new features, security updates, and performance improvements after they leave the factory, changing how vehicles are designed, sold, and maintained. GEM’s Future Frontiers of Mobility Systems report provides a broad view of the national SDV landscape and examines how the Detroit Region compares with other leading U.S. technology centers.

Key Findings

Michigan is a Top State for Patents Filed

Since 2021, 2,941 SDV patents have been filed in Michigan, second only to California. 96% of these patents originated in the Detroit Region.

The Detroit Region is a Leader for VC Investment for SDV Technologies

Since 2021, Detroit Region companies have received about $1.1 Billion in Venture Capital investment for SDV technologies, accounting for about 95% of the Michigan total.
