Propulsion Batteries
Why are Propulsion Batteries an Important Technology for the Detroit Region’s mobility industry?
Propulsion batteries are perhaps the key technology at the heart of the electrification transformation underway in all mobility sectors. They provide the electricity necessary for vehicle propulsion and are typically the largest, heaviest, and most expensive components of electric vehicles.
U.S. production of propulsion batteries for all mobility sectors is expected to experience fourfold growth by increasing from 1.8 million in 2024 to nearly 6 million in 2030. In 2024, 93.6% of total battery production was slated for light vehicle applications. Because the Detroit Region specializes in light vehicle development and manufacturing, it is uniquely poised to benefit from battery technology expertise as other mobility sectors follow in adopting electrification technologies.
