The eyes of the world are on Detroit and our region as we lead the charge in mobility innovation, The Global Epicenter of Mobility (GEM) initiative is about moving beyond the status quo and instead, doing transformational work that will have a positive impact on generations to come.

Right here, right now, we have an unparalleled opportunity to create a playbook on how to build an inclusive epicenter of mobility. So, what does that mean, exactly? GEM is focused on bringing several key equity and inclusion initiatives to the Detroit Region through:

  • Championing Inclusivity: Ensuring that all GEM partners use an equitable approach to inclusion.
  • Bridging Wealth Gaps: Implementing strategies to reduce economic disparities by promoting inclusion in the workforce, supplier diversity, entrepreneurship, and innovation. These are crucial tools for building wealth and fostering financial stability in marginalized communities.
  • Community Empowerment: Actively engaging with historically excluded communities, listening to their needs, and ensuring their voices help shape our efforts.
  • Championing Innovation: Fostering and promoting innovation that is designed for all, advocating that new technologies and advancements in mobility are inclusive and accessible to diverse populations.
  • Strengthening Connectivity: Enhancing regional connectivity to integrate historically excluded communities, including rural areas and those with persistent poverty, into the broader economic ecosystem, creating a cohesive, inclusive, and thriving region.

The GEM initiative is fortunate to have the expertise and guidance of a recently announced DEIJ workgroup, which will help inform strategies that ensure the Detroit Region grows together, leaving no one behind. We’re also leveraging experts in community engagement to help us reach communities impacted by the changing mobility ecosystem to their voices are heard through carefully curated listening sessions and complementary initiatives. Members of the GEM coalition will be partaking in an immersive diversity and inclusion leadership training event, where we will take what we’ve learned and apply it to our everyday work to make this mobility ecosystem the most inclusive it can be.

GEM isn’t doing this work in a vacuum. We’re utilizing best-in-class resources and partners to bolster our impact and ensure we’re delivering measurable, repeatable outcomes that will strengthen our region’s mobility footprint for years to come. Consider this a call to action for everyone to join us in this movement, ensuring that equity and inclusion are at the forefront of our region’s growth.
